Take the time to thank a VetDear Friends and Supporters, Today we as a nation pause to gratefully acknowledge the service—and sacrifice—of America's military men and women. Today, Veterans Day, was established to commemorate the end of World War I, to be recognized at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month. It has become an opportunity to reflect on how much we truly owe to our service men and women. For many families today has special meaning as they celebrate their friends and loved ones serving in the Armed Forces across our land and across the seas—especially those in harm's way in Iraq and Afghanistan. I join my prayers with others throughout the nation for our soldiers' safe return home, as well as prayers for those impacted by the recent tragic events at Fort Hood, Texas. For my family, this Veterans Day is especially meaningful. In early October, I made a trip to Fort Benning, Georgia, to say goodbye to my son Adam and daughter-in-law Natalie as they deployed for their third tours of duty to Iraq. Today, I will be think of them both, and pray for their safe return home next fall. I will think of my son Jesse, of when he served his tour in Iraq and we nearly lost him. And of his wife Evelyn, who served two tours of duty as a convoy driver in Iraq. For my family, Veterans Day is personal. Today we as a nation show our appreciation to those who have put their lives on the line for our freedom—mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, of all races and ethnicities—who have engaged in selfless service to their country. May we remember their sacrifice every day—not simply on November 11th. Sincerely, Posted on November 11, 2009.
