Happy President's DayToday, Californians will honor Presidents Washington and Lincoln as they observe President’s Day. Politicians today would do well to heed advice offered by Washington so many years ago. In his Farewell Address, George Washington cautioned against foreign entanglements. We would be well served as a nation to remember Washington’s wise words as Congress attempts to justify expenditures topping $100 billion per year in Afghanistan and a similar eye-popping annual sum for Iraq. I continue to believe it is time for America’s troops to come home. As for Lincoln, a Russian, Leo Tolstoy, captured his essence better than most when he wrote, “Washington was a typical American. Napoleon was a typical Frenchman. But Lincoln was a humanitarian as broad as the world. He was bigger than his country—bigger than all the presidents together.” Have a great President’s Day!
