Happy 4th of JulyJuly 4th marks the 234th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It is a day of which all Americans are justly proud. In 1776, 56 signers pledged to one another “our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor,” to establish a government that respects “certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Since that sacred date 234 years ago, our nation has survived invasion, civil war, and depressions. Our forefathers defeated the British and endured a bloody war between North and South. They triumphed over vicious economic downturns caused by lack of regulation and corporate monopolies that thirsted for unconscionable profits during the Robber Baron era. Yet, today families face a severe recession, and its cause is not dissimilar to those of the past— inadequate financial regulation and irresponsible, exploitative—and arguably anti-American— corporate behavior. This July 4th, the 44th District’s working families confront the worst economy in almost eighty years. The pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness has been hijacked by the struggle to survive increasingly grim economic circumstances. If you are unemployed and cannot meet mortgages or pay bills, economic recovery seems excruciatingly distant. When confronted by the worst economy since the Great Depression, the radical wing of the Republican Party—and some Democrats—unbelievably seem committed to inflicting the policies of Herbert Hoover on struggling families again—cuts and austerity that drove 1930’s families into desperate poverty. This Fourth of July, we need bold leadership committed to restoring America’s prosperity— leadership that is not part of the Washington machine—leadership that understands the needs of working families. The prescription for what ails us is clear:
This July 4th, let’s recommit to the Founders’ dream of a nation established to respect life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. End Wall Street abuse. End the anti-American export of our work. End the simply unaffordable occupation of Iraq and war in Afghanistan. It’s time to declare independence from the Washington insiders and the bought-and-sold politicians. And it’s time to bring the incumbents home—for good! Now, that’s something to celebrate! Happy Fourth of July! Bill Posted on July 4, 2010. Tags: 4th of july,
