The Ken Calvert Corruption ChroniclesEpisode 3: Voting for Abusive Discipline of ChildrenEpisode 3: Voting for Abusive Discipline of Children Yesterday, the House approved the Keeping All Students Safe Act, a bipartisan bill providing comprehensive protection for children against abusive disciplinary actions at schools, such as restraints, drugging, or being isolated in a locked room. Ken Calvert voted against this bipartisan bill. Ken Calvert voted for the continued use of abusive discipline in the classroom. Calvert’s opponent, Bill Hedrick, educator and School Board member, stated "Every child deserves to be treated with dignity. Schools need to use the many research-based, humane behavior techniques available. The prohibited practices read shockingly like a page from the Inquisition. I don't know what is worse: that the need to end such abusive practices requires federal action, or the fact that 153 members of Congress – including my opponent Ken Calvert – saw fit to oppose ending these medieval methods." – H.R.4247 Keeping All Students Safe Act Bill Hedrick has been a public school teacher for 35 years and, as a member of the Corona-Norco Board of Education, has helped lead California’s 8th largest school district for 21 years, improving the education of 53,000 children. With a grassroots campaign and no national support, Bill came within less than two percentage points of unseating 16-year incumbent Rep. Ken Calvert in 2008. Bill is running again to bring real leadership – leadership we can trust – to the people of California’s 44th Congressional District. |
