Signature verification and sorting of ballots will continue this weekend, with the actual count beginning on Monday, November 11th and resuming after the holiday on Wednesday.

The Hedrick Campaign has enlisted over 100 volunteers to observe the process, working in shifts to cover every available hour at the Riverside County Registrar of Voters in Moreno Valley.

Volunteers this week remarked repeatedly that they were impressed with the professionalism and efficiency of the Registrar’s staff. The campaign has found Registrar of Voters, Barbara Dunmore, to be totally forthcoming in answering all questions and clearly explaining the process ahead.

Moreover, the Campaign shares Ms. Dunmore’s determination to make sure that every legitimate ballot is counted in this race.

The campaign, with its legion of dedicated volunteers, looks forward to participating in the procedure in the weeks ahead with absolute confidence in the transparency, security and consistency of the process.

Too Close to Call

The only thing we know right now is that we don't know anything for sure. This race is still too close to call.

There are up to 100,000 ballots (provisional and late vote-by-mail) that have yet to be counted in Riverside County. Of those 100,000 ballots yet to be counted, we aren’t sure how many are within our district.

The OC Register had earlier called this race for Calvert, but has since rescinded that claim and drawn the same conclusion we have - until every last vote has been counted, we will not know who has won. As it stands now, the results are: Bill Hedrick 48.2% Ken Calvert 51.7%.

We will make an official statement on the outcome when every last vote has been counted. If you voted on a provisional ballot (and apparently this happened a lot in Corona, Norco, and the east side of Riverside), or if you voted-by-mail, call the registrar's office and ask that every ballot be counted.

We are consulting with attorneys to ensure the integrity of the voting and counting process and we will keep you posted. We have had--and will continue to have--observers in Riverside and Santa Ana as the ballot verification continues. Thank you all for your unwavering support throughout this election. Win or lose, this race is incredibly tight--the most competitive challenge in Southern California.

Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez and Philanthropist Richard O’Neill Host Fundraiser for 44th CD Candidate Bill Hedrick

San Juan Capistrano, CA, October 20 – On October 19, approximately 100 local supporters came out to show that south Orange County is in play in Bill Hedrick’s race for the 44th Congressional District. The event was hosted by 47th Congressional District Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez and philanthropist Richard O’Neill. Jim Dean, Chair of our nation's largest progressive political action community, Democracy for America, flew in to attend the event.

Jim Dean told the group of supporters, “Bill Hedrick is an educator, elected official, and community leader with a record of commonsense problem-solving that can’t be matched. Bill has the experience, wisdom, and commitment to progressive values that will restore faith in our system and produce the results that are so desperately needed in our nation today.”

Given Hedrick’s momentum and the incumbent, Ken Calvert’s, growing vulnerability, Congresswoman Sanchez is taking an active role in Hedrick’s campaign.

“Every election cycle at least one campaign emerges as an unexpected victory on Election Day,” stated Sanchez. “I believe Bill Hedrick’s bid for Congress is going to be the surprise campaign of 2008. As with my first campaign, Bill Hedrick is going from city to city, block to block, and living room to living room, talking to folks in person about the real problems they face and sharing his vision for change. I defied any and all predictions leading up to Election Day and won my race by a mere 968 votes. I genuinely believe Bill will do the same.”

Congresswoman Sanchez is not the only one to recognize Calvert’s vulnerability.

Calvert is a 16 year incumbent with a 10% registration advantage, but he is running from his party affiliation. He has sent out mailers without a single mention of his membership in the Republican Party and his campaign slogan is “An Independent Voice Working for You.” Would a safe incumbent with registration on his side behave this way?

Calvert clearly understands the Hedrick campaign has been on the ground for several months, educating Decline to State voters and Republican voters within the district about his ties to the economic collapse, the housing market melt-down and big oil.

Calvert knows that even in a typically dedicated Republican stronghold like California’s 44th Congressional District, his solid 94% Bush-aligned voting record and being named one of the top 20 most corrupt members of Congress 3 years running are working against him.

As the economy remains the top issue this year, voters within the district are wary of a 16 year incumbent who campaigns for Main Street, only to vote consistently for Wall Street. A glaring example was his ‘yes’ on the $700 billion dollar bailout vote – a vote that is overwhelmingly unpopular in the district.

Hedrick stated, “I promise a return to responsible fiscal policies. A return to policies that address the needs of struggling working families. A return to policies that will benefit every citizen in the district socially, economically and environmentally. And as we inundate the district with my positive message, do not be surprised to witness another return – that of Mr. Calvert to Corona on November 4th.”

Bill Hedrick is the Democratic nominee for Congress in California's 44th District, which includes Riverside, Corona, Norco, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, and unincorporated areas of Riverside and Orange Counties. Bill, 56, and his wife, Beth, have raised five children in the Inland Empire; two sons and a daughter-in-law are active members of the military. An educator for 33 years, Bill is serving his fifth term on the Corona-Norco School Board, and was just reelected to his tenth year as President of the Rialto Education Association.

Hedrick Questions Calvert’s Judgment on Bailout Vote

Last week, Congressman Ken Calvert voted to bail himself out after 16 years of bad judgment. With his ‘yes’ vote on the Financial Market Bill, Calvert sought to fill massive holes in the economy that he has helped dig with $700 billion taxpayers’ dollars.

Bill Hedrick, Calvert’s opponent in the 44th Congressional District race stated, “The Financial Market Bill deserved to be rejected. I am not surprised, however, that Mr. Calvert chose to support it.”

“With no hearings and in an incredible rush to judgment, this bill sought to transfer up to $700 billion taxpayer dollars to mask negligent and/or irresponsible business practices. It is a classic case of socializing losses, while astoundingly leaving the very same CEO's with bloated compensation in charge of failing enterprises.”

These CEOs owe their enormous wealth in large part to the money made from repackaging and selling sub-prime loans. By Calvert’s own admission in the Orange County Register on September 22, “The problem at hand is to fix the core problem that prompted this market unrest in the first place and that’s the housing market.”

As Calvert has remained an active real estate investor in the district throughout his Congressional career, are we then to believe that he was unaware of the dangerous lending practices that prompted this “market unrest?”

Consider that Calvert voted for the granddaddy of deregulation, Gramm-Leach-Bliley, voted against the Shareholder Vote on Compensation Act, which would have given shareholders the power to block pay plans, bonuses and “golden parachutes,” and stated after a Senate vote in 2003 to further loosen regulations on adjustable rate mortgages, “I am pleased the Senate has recognized the importance of allowing a range of adjustable mortgage rates. This provision will increase interest rate flexibility and thereby contribute to a stable economy and a robust real estate market.”

Five years later citizens find themselves bearing the brunt of Calvert’s flawed judgment as to what really creates a ‘stable economy and a robust real estate market.

Bill Hedrick stated, “Mr. Calvert voted to burden every man, woman, and child of the 44th District with thousands of dollars of new debt--debt for which they have no blame. This was a bill of, by, and for financiers and Washington insiders, at the expense of middle class Americans. We can do better, and I am disappointed in the vote cast by Mr. Calvert for Wall Street at the expense of Main Street.”

The League of Women Voters and the Riverside Junior League had agreed to sponsor a debate.

Bill Hedrick stated, “More than ever we need to hear from those wishing to represent us in Washington and a debate sponsored by completely non-partisan, trusted groups such as the League of Women Voters and the Junior League would have allowed just that. It has been the bad judgment of many of our current political leaders that have brought our economy to this dire place. And now it’s the hardworking taxpayers of this country who are being asked to bail out Wall Street for that bad judgment. As much as any other leader, Calvert needs to explain his votes that fueled this disastrous behavior.”

Back in 1999, Calvert voted for the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, which is credited with opening the flood gates of deregulation that has led to the financial melt down.
Four years later, in 2003, Calvert authored the Access to Affordable Mortgages Act (HR 1443). At that time he stated, “In order to promote homeownership we need to give lenders and consumers incentive to enter into mortgage agreements by giving both parties
the flexibility to do so.” And five years later under Calvert’s leadership and call for ‘flexibility’ what do we have?

Bill Hedrick stated, “We face a staggering financial crisis, fostered by leaders like Calvert who zealously supported deregulation and turned a blind eye to the practices of the free wheeling, predatory lenders until the sub-prime mortgage crisis had so thoroughly poisoned our financial institutions that our children and grandchildren will be paying the $700 billion dollar tab for years to come.”

Some of the bailout money will cover colossal salaries and bonuses of CEOs which justifiably enrages Americans. True to form, Calvert voted against the Shareholder Vote on Compensation Act (H.R. 1257) in April of 2007, which would have required companies to reveal more details about executive salaries and perks and would have given shareholders the power to block pay plans, bonuses and “golden parachutes.”

It should also be considered that had Calvert further had his way, things could be even worse. Calvert supported partial privatization of social security which would have resulted in those funds being tied to the stock market. What would our seniors be facing right now had that piece of legislation actually passed?

These are the questions and actions that demand answers. But, Calvert has a double-standard. When asked by the Orange County Register if he thought Senator McCain should debate Senator Obama on September 26th, Calvert replied, ‘Yes, there should be a debate. At this time, the American people want to hear from both candidates on foreign policy and although the economy is a priority right now, there is another significant threat to our country: radical Islamic terrorists.’

Hedrick added, “It appears the Congressman does not hold himself to the same established democratic principles he asks of other candidates. And I would suggest there is another threat to our country - elected officials who refuse to listen and respond to their constituents and refuse to be forthcoming about their motives and objectives. In doing so, you can trust that Calvert will continue to offer leadership that is not just ineffective, but damaging to the well-being of his constituents.”

Congressman Calvert has also tentatively refused a debate for high school seniors at La Sierra High School, which Hedrick readily accepted. Government and history teacher, Joel Whelchel said, “Calvert’s office claims that there are legalities involved, that the debate will somehow violate the California State Education’s Curriculum Code. This makes no sense. Not only was it my intention to augment the curriculum by giving my students the opportunity to see our political system in action, it has been my experience that elected officials will speak to students whenever they are available.”

As with the League of Women Voters, Whelchel was told by Calvert’s office that he has agreed to one ‘debate’. It is sponsored by Cox Cable Service, only one question will be asked and it will be televised ‘on demand’ which will most likely guarantee a small audience.

Black Voice News Endorses Bill Hedrick for California’s 44th Congressional District

The Hedrick for Congress Campaign is pleased to announce the endorsement of one of Riverside’s most trusted news sources, Black Voice News.

Chairman Hardy Brown stated, “Bill Hedrick is a good solid replacement for Ken Calvert in the 44th Congressional District. Hedrick has been involved in education at various levels for many years as a teacher for the Rialto School District where he was elected president of the teachers association and school board member in the Corona-Norco School District. If we are going to CHANGE the culture of Washington and return our government back to being for the people then we have to send a people person as our representative. His knowledge and understanding of educational issues are needed on a national level.”

“I am truly honored by this endorsement,” said Hedrick. “Black Voice News began over thirty years ago as a University of California Riverside student newspaper, with the aim of educating their community about racial issues and student unrest. As our nation faces unprecedented challenges, I share their dedication to promote an honestly informed and engaged community.”

The Black Voice News covers business and economic development, health, law enforcement, diversity, education and homeownership. The newspaper is also an active and enthusiastic supporter of its community, partnering with business and education in a wide variety of events, forums and workshops. Representative Ken Calvert (CA 44th CD) has made list for the third year in a row. http://www.crewsmostcorrupt.org/

"He's hit the trifecta! One of the 20 most corrupt Congressman three years running," stated Bill Hedrick, his opponent in November. "According to CREW, Mr. Calvert is still under federal investigation for his earmarks - and that's just a small sample of his many transgressions. He's held this office for sixteen years. It's pretty clear what kind of 'representation' we're going to get if he's re-elected for another two."Hedrick continued, "The people of the 44th Congressional District deserve better than this. We deserve honest, responsible, and effective representation."
CREW cites Calvert’s practice of earmarking for personal financial benefit, earmarking for clients of the disgraced and now dissolved lobbying firm Copeland Lowery, and his illegal purchase of a parcel of public land in his district’s Jurupa area. Calvert also holds the distinction of being one of twelve on the list who is under investigation and the only one named whose constituents recently voted overwhelmingly to recoup land that was sold to him illegally through the use of eminent domain.

Since 2003, CREW has closely monitored government ethics, bringing egregious conduct to light and holding public officials accountable for their misconduct. CREW’s research staff exhaustively investigates reports on corruption, files high-impact lawsuits by their legal team, and keeps citizens informed on the latest national ethics news. http://www.citizensforethics.org/

Bill Hedrick is the Democratic nominee for Congress in California's 44th District, which includes Riverside, Corona, Norco, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, and unincorporated areas of Riverside and Orange Counties. The wake-up call this year is the price of gasoline, which at $4.50 a gallon is higher than Americans have ever seen it before. Who would have thought that we would have to invent words like “staycation” to put an optimistic face on the fact that our freedom is constrained by economic realities?

Decades of passionate protests by environmentalists never killed the SUV, or made the plug-in hybrid the most longed-for product of a generation. It is, as is typical in the U.S., economic pressure that has shoved us to the place where we are ripe for a more sustainable energy model, along with the hint of freedom from dependence on foreign oil.

The oil industry has worked tirelessly to convince the American people that there is no better alternative than to enrich Saudi business partners, demonize oil-rich countries and destroy unspoiled American wilderness. In fact, there are 68 million acres of federal land already leased by oil companies for energy production now sitting idle. But President Bush is not satisfied. He wants to make sure our public beaches and wilderness areas are handed over to oil companies before he leaves office. But there is an alternative.

The energy below the ground is expensive to retrieve. Why would we pay to drill for it, when we have the technology to tap into the waves, the sun and the wind above ground? The cost to drill new oil wells, and process new oil, can just as easily pay for new solar panels in Arizona, or floating “windfarms” at sea. Waves crash to shore with an energy and a regularity that gives new meaning to the word “sustainable.”

Why aren’t we capturing that energy?Instead we stay stuck in the past. Exxon Mobil, Shell, Chevron and BP — the original partners in the Iraq Petroleum Company — have apparently concluded successful talks with Iraq's Oil Ministry for no-bid contracts to service Iraq's largest fields.

By all appearances, we have committed our blood and our treasure to Iraq to protect our oil energy interests, even at the expense of destabilizing the Middle-East, creating more resentment and violence and in turn, making the region less safe. I firmly believe that at the root of this conflict in Iraq is the failure of the Bush Administration to produce a responsible energy policy—one that moves us toward self-reliant energy efficiency with an emphasis on renewable energy sources. We are engaged in an occupation of Iraq which only serves to underscore our dangerous dependence on oil, while draining our nation of vital resources needed for health care, infrastructure and education.

Today we find our economy moving toward a serious recession as we pay exorbitant prices for gas, while prices for other commodities rise in harmony. Socially, the backbone of our nation – our middle class – is made to bear the brunt; having already suffered job losses and lower wages as a result of our trade policies.

For years the question has been: will we control our future or will our future control us? I believe our future will be determined by our willingness to adapt and innovate, and I know the time to act is now. So much technology is already in place. With the right leadership we can end our dependence on foreign oil, create a healthier environment and greatly improve our national security and the security of our allies. It is time now to correct our national course.

So as you are taking a break this summer, and calculating how far you can drive on a tank of gas, remember the vacations at the shore: the sea breeze, the sound of the waves, and the sun shining on your face. All that motion, all that energy. It’s all still there, and ready for us to wake up and take advantage of it.

Bill Hedrick

SEIU Local 721 Endorses Bill Hedrick for the 44th Congressional District

The Hedrick for Congress campaign is pleased to announce the endorsement of the Service Employees International Union Local 721 (SEIU 721).

Corinne Parker, 721 Union Steward, stated, “Bill Hedrick is the only candidate is this race who understands the challenges working families face everyday. As reported by David Espo of the Associated Press, consultants for the National Republican Congressional Committee submitted a list of talking points for Republican candidates to stress when they return to their districts for the holiday.

The recommendations include; ‘encourage Republican candidates to establish themselves in a personal manner, emphasizing local issues whenever possible,’ and ‘work to develop an issues matrix that is different than in years past and also shows a deep empathy towards the voters.’ In other words, try to sound like you care and are connected to your constituents.

It’s too late. The disconnect between constituents of the 44th Congressional District and their representative of 16 years, Ken Calvert, is self-evident. Constituents face staggering gas prices, stagnant wages, lost jobs and the sub-prime mortgage crisis - all the result of representation that is out of touch with the real ‘matrix of issues’ that working families face everyday.

Bill Hedrick, the Democratic Candidate facing Ken Calvert next November states, “My wife and I have lived here for 28 years and raised five children. I have been a teacher for 33 years, a Corona-Norco School Board member for 19 years, and am entering my tenth year as President of the Rialto Education Association. As a parent, teacher, and school board member I have been on the front lines, working with struggling families who want nothing more than financial security and healthy, well-educated children.

For sixteen years Mr. Calvert has watched from afar while our local economy has hollowed out, as the immigration and health care crises have deepened, as our environment has deteriorated, as our schools and children have been left behind and as our jobs have been lost to outsourcing.”

Consultants also advised the Republican Congressional Committee that losses in closely watched Congressional races in Illinois, Louisiana and Mississippi were due to the fact that, “Democrats ran candidates that were a reflection of their districts.”

Bill Hedrick, a middle-class father of five, who cares deeply about the economic, social and environmental health of his community, is a direct reflection of the constituents of California’s 44th District.

Perhaps the Committee’s consultants could have saved time and effort by simply quoting this phrase from our Declaration of Independence, ‘Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed…’ Let’s revive our nation’s goal of representative government and elect Bill Hedrick, who will speak for all the people of 44th Congressional District.

The Energy Conflict

On June 19th, I had the opportunity to speak to a gathering at the Canyon Hill Clubhouse in Riverside. I addressed a variety of topics, but concentrated on the continuing Occupation of Iraq and our failed energy policies.

Whatever our true motives were for invading Iraq, the Administration’s stated goals have been accomplished. We are certain there are no weapons of mass destruction and Saddam is gone. It is time to enact a swift and safe strategy to bring our brave men and women home.

However, we know now that a new U.S. Embassy has been completed in the Green Zone and it is the largest embassy on the planet – in fact, it is roughly the same size as the Vatican. Also, “enduring”—read permanent—bases are being built throughout Iraq, many near important oil reserves. Plus, we learned something else this week; Exxon Mobil, Shell, Chevron and BP — the original partners in the Iraq Petroleum Company — have apparently concluded successful talks with Iraq's Oil Ministry for no-bid contracts to service Iraq's largest fields.

By all appearances, I believe we are committing for the long haul with the single intent of protecting our interests in Iraq’s oil fields. I also believe our continued presence will further destabilize the Middle-East, creating more resentment and violence and in turn, make the region less safe than when the conflict began. I firmly believe that at the root of this conflict is the failure of this Administration to produce a responsible energy policy—one that moves us toward self-reliant energy efficiency with an emphasis on renewable energy sources.

Three decades ago President Carter said, ‘We simply must balance our demand for energy with our rapidly shrinking resources….if we fail to act soon, we will face an economic, social and political crisis that will threaten our free institutions.’ With that, Carter established America's first national energy policy which emphasized development of alternative energy sources and conservation.

What happened? The oil industry went to work convincing the American people that there really was no energy problem at all and the administrations that followed proceeded to enrich their Saudi business partners and the oil industry.

Assess Carter’s various policy decisions as you will, but he was right on this one.

Today we find our economy moving toward a serious recession as we pay exorbitant prices for gas, while prices for other commodities rise in harmony.

Socially, the backbone of our nation – our middle class – is made to bear the brunt; having already suffered job loses and lower wages as a result of our trade policies.

Politically, we are engaged in an occupation of Iraq which only serves to underscore our dangerous dependence on oil, while draining our nation of vital resources needed for health care, infrastructure and education.

For years the question has been: will we control our future or will our future control us?
I believe our future is controlled by our willingness to adapt and innovate and I know the time to act is now. So much technology is already in place. With the right leadership we can end our dependence on foreign oil, create a healthier environment and greatly improve our national security and the security of our allies. It is time now to correct our national course. Send me to Congress to vote for policy measures that will help ensure the economic and environmental health of our nation and its citizens, now and for the future.

Bill Hedrick

Riverside City Councilmember Andy Melendrez Endorses Bill Hedrick

Hedrick for Congress is pleased to announce the endorsement of Riverside’s Ward Two City Councilmember Andy Melendrez.

Councilmember Melendrez stated, “Throughout his career in education Bill Hedrick has been dedicated to improving the lives of students, teachers, families and the community as a whole. At every event Bill has taken the opportunity to talk to residents about issues they find most troubling and share his vision for an environmentally healthy Inland Empire. At the heart of each event is education - raising the level of awareness of both adults and children while learning about the best solutions for the challenges facing the district.

Nationally, the issue of the environment and education is being directly addressed. On June 4, 2008 the U.S. House committed more than $20 billion over the next five years to help states build and renovate schools to make them more energy-efficient and better for the environment. The 21st Century Green High-Performing Public School Facilities Act ensures that school districts will quickly receive funds for school modernization, renovation, and repair projects that improve the teaching and learning climate, student and teacher health and safety, and energy efficiency.

Bill stated, “We can’t underestimate the vital part that a healthy school environment plays in the learning process. Studies repeatedly demonstrate the correlation between school facility quality, student achievement and teacher retention. However, for the past eight years the federal government has provided almost no direct aid to help states and schools pay for school construction and repair. This funding will not only make facilities safer and cleaner, but through energy efficiency we can dramatically lower the cost of running school districts.”

Current 44th District Congressman Ken Calvert voted against the measure. The Senate is expected to vote on the measure soon, however, the White House is threatening a veto, stating that the bill, "would create an inappropriate and costly new federal role in modernizing and renovating public schools."

Bill stated, “This is yet another reason why my vote is needed in Congress. I am keenly aware that good public schools and a healthy environment are major priorities for the citizens of the 44th District and they can trust that when issues like this one come to the U.S. House floor -my vote will reflect those priorities.”

Happy Father's Day 2008

Dear Friends and Supporters,

It's Father's Day, and I hope that you have a great one! I'm sure I will-- I am very happy to have all five of my children under one roof to celebrate!

Our son Adam, a staff sergeant based at Fort Benning, Georgia, returned from Iraq in late May and is currently on leave visiting us. Jesse, now a corporal with the California National Guard, will soon leave for another deployment to Iraq. Our daughter Sarah works in Riverside as she prepares to return to school, and twins Zach and Rebekkah look forward to their senior year of high school.

This time of year also means the calendar is filled with graduations. For school board members, there is nothing like recognizing the hard work of high school seniors—and their parents! It was a pleasure to participate in Norco High's commencement this year and award diplomas to our future leaders.

Again, wishing all the fathers a great day—and a great summer!

Sincerely,

Bill Hedrick

A Return Home from Iraq

When I began my campaign last year to represent California’s 44th Congressional District, I was motivated by the many policy failures of the Bush Administration embraced by the incumbent congressman. These included the President’s failure to provide a universal health care proposal, an education program designed to undermine our public schools, and trade agreements that have killed good jobs for working families. But personally, for me and my family, the most egregious disappointment has been this Administration’s failed policy in Iraq.

In our family, the Occupation of Iraq is not an abstract concept. It is something we live everyday. On May 16th, my wife Beth and I saw our son Adam return home from his second deployment with the 3rd Infantry Division.

The reception hall at Lawson Army Airfield, Fort Benning, was filled with exuberant, expectant, and proud family members. The soldiers entered the hall in formation and marched past a "Welcome Home Heroes" banner. A roar erupted from the hundreds gathered to greet their loved ones. Homecoming, especially from a combat tour, is exciting for the soldiers, and emotionally charged for their families.

Beth and I felt thankful that Adam had returned safely once again, and were incredibly proud to see him carry a brigade flag into the hall. All around you could see the joy as families and soldiers were reunited. As the names of those who died during this deployment scrolled across a screen, the happiness of the moment was tempered by the knowledge that too many did not return that day to Fort Benning and their families.

Fort Benning is clearly the economic heart of Columbus, Georgia, and the city warmly celebrates the return of soldiers with "Welcome Home Troops" signs and military discounts for everything imaginable. On our weekend visit, returning Iraq veterans and new recruits on leave for "Family Day" filled stores, restaurants, and hotels. This is a town that generally lives for the prosperity brought by the military, and appreciates the combat pay differentials and re-enlistment bonuses specifically.

There is no way one can take part in such a weekend without reflecting upon and questioning the policies that send our sons and daughters, husbands and wives, fathers and mothers halfway around the world to occupy a land where we cannot impose peace. Questioning these policies is necessary, especially for military families, as multiple deployments appear endless and the human and financial cost remains astronomical.

I am proud of our troops. I am especially proud of Adam, and of Jesse and Evelyn, my other soldier-son and his wife. Adam is scheduled to return to Iraq in November 2009 as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom VII. Jesse will redeploy to northern Iraq in late August. That will make seven tours of duty for the Hedrick family: three for Adam, two for Jesse, and two for Evelyn. How much more can we ask of the same soldiers and same families before we ask too much?

I am now, more than ever, certain that America's current role in Iraq must come to a close. I wholeheartedly endorse the Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq (www.responsibleplan.com) – a seven point plan supported by Major General Paul Eaton, Ret., and others to end the occupation and bring our soldiers home.

It was great to join other military families at Fort Benning's homecoming celebration for our troops. It is right and important to honor the real sacrifices made by our troops and their families during these long deployments. However, the greatest honor we can bestow is beginning the process of drawing down our troops. Now, right now, is the time to bring our sons and daughters home.

Bill Hedrick

Bill Hedrick Speaks with Students at RCC Norco Campus

On Monday, May 5th, Riverside Community College students gathered in the Little Theater at the Norco Campus to hear Bill Hedrick, candidate for the 44th Congressional District, describe his vision for their future; a future that includes better access to higher education, a healthier local economy and global environment, and affordable health care for all Americans

Bill began by describing the 44th District, and his service to the Corona-Norco area specifically as the longest serving School Board member in CNUSD history. “If you graduated from Norco High School in the last nineteen years you probably have a picture of me shaking your hand as I handed you your high school diploma,” he stated.

Bill continued by explaining that their current Representative “never breaks rank with the Bush administration.” Bill said he takes serious exception to the incumbent’s support of administration policies that have led the nation into an economic recession, a pre-emptive war with immeasurable costs, a health care system which has become dependent on extremely expensive emergency room visits, and a K-12 education system that is becoming more ineffective while access to higher education becomes less accessible. Bill noted that these issues are really non-partisan, as they address our moral responsibility to consider the health and well-being of all the members of our national community.

During the closing discussion the dialog turned back to education issues, with questions about the administration’s K – 12 education reform program, No Child Left Behind (NCLB), and Bill’s recommendations to improve access to higher education. Asked for his opinion of NCLB, Bill stated:

The program is a formula for failure. Following its criteria, in a couple of years Corona, Riverside, and Norco schools will all be listed as failures.

NCLB makes no accommodations for anyone, including special needs children. NCLB is a punitive, standards-based system that is unfair to California’s unique education challenges: twenty-five percent of Southern California school children are not native English speakers. After one year of study, these children take the same test taken by students from largely English-speaking, privileged communities and it is simply unrealistic to expect them to be able to meet the same proficiency standards. California schools are then compared to schools nationwide, where only 1% of students are non-native English speakers.

Education cannot be made better with a one-size-fits-all solution. State and local educators must have the ability to judge and adapt programs to the needs and characteristics of their region.

As college tuitions rise and acceptance becomes more competitive, Bill was asked to elaborate on improving access to higher education. He stated he is especially impressed by former Presidential candidate John Edwards’ “College Opportunity Agenda” and included Edwards’ “College for Everyone” initiative in response:

Lower interest rates for student loans

Adequately fund the federal Pell Grant system, designed to help low-income students afford a college education. The maximum Pell Grant award amount for 2008 is $4,310. This is sadly below the national average cost of yearly attendance, which is more than $15,000. Twenty years ago, a Pell Grant covered 60% of a student's yearly cost a public four-year institution, today it doesn’t even cover one-third.

Assure everyone a place in a public university by implementing a plan like, “College for Everyone,” that creates a national initiative to pay public college tuition, fees and books. In return, students will be required to work part-time, either at the college or for a non-profit, take a college-prep course in high school, and stay out of trouble.

Plans like these are at the heart of Bill’s belief that, “one of the greatest investments we can make for our children and for our country is in education.” It appears, however, that the spending priorities of the current administration follow a different path – continued funding of the occupation of Iraq with its estimated $3 trillion dollar price tag. Bill emphasized his desire for change, “We need to bring home our troops quickly and safely, and reinvest in America. Every dollar sent over there is one dollar less we have here to fix our economy, provide health care for all Americans, and make sure that every student has access to the best education possible.”

Fundraisers for Bill Hedrick Bridge the 44th Congressional District

Fundraisers for 44th Congressional Candidate Bill Hedrick were held at Billie Lovmark's beach front home in San Clemente on Sunday, April 27, and the following Sunday, May 4th, in Ring and Anja Carde’s expansive garden in Riverside’s Victoria neighborhood.

Those who attended were very pleased to meet Bill, as they enjoyed looking down at a wonderful view of the Pacific Ocean on the west coast and a beautiful array of flowers with a canyon view inland.

While the scenery at the events was different, the sentiments of the attendees was the same. Many remarked that they were greatly impressed by what Bill had to say and are extremely glad that he is a candidate for the 44th Congressional District. Some also expressed their extreme dissatisfaction with the incumbent and the direction he has taken the 44th District. Those present at the events found it especially refreshing to have a candidate whose priority is addressing the real needs of his constituency and the nation, while insisting on retuning responsibility and accountability to government. Several people also said how pleased they were with the way Bill took the time to answer all their questions and commented about how well he is able to "think on his feet".

People commented as the left that they wanted to help in some way and several wrote checks to assist the Bill Hedrick for Congress Campaign. Many also asked when they would be able to get yard signs and were promised they would be available soon after the June primary.

Everyone recognized that this is a grassroots campaign with volunteers and donors playing a very important role to send Bill Hedrick to Washington, DC to represent all the people of the California 44th Congressional District.

Bill Hedrick Celebrates Cinco de Mayo in Corona

On Saturday, May 3rd, hundreds of people lined the parade route on 6th Street in Corona to observe Cinco de Mayo, a day to celebrate Mexican heritage, culture and pride.

Bill Hedrick, candidate for the 44th Congressional district, enthusiastically participated in the parade. He waved to families as volunteers distributed information on Bill’s history of leadership in education in Corona and his positions on vital national issues. Bill has a special connection with Latino families in the Corona-Norco area where he was a bilingual elementary school teacher for nineteen years.

As a member of the Corona-Norco School Board, Bill introduced the Dual Language Immersion Program. The aim of the program is to teach students to speak fluently in two languages, in this case Spanish speaking students become proficient in English, while English speaking students learn the Spanish language. The program has been successfully implemented at Garretson Elementary in Corona and Washington Elementary in Norco.

Bill believes that the importance of bilingual education must not be ignored, “we are a global community, dependent on one another’s economies and we must prepare our children to speak the language of the community – certainly English and Spanish, but Asian and Middle-Eastern languages, as well.”

The Cinco de Mayo celebration continued in the City Park where volunteers registered voters, distributed American flags, campaign stickers and literature. Bill spoke to voters, in Spanish when necessary, about his determination to represent all the people of the 44th Congressional District and return responsibility and accountability to the office. Residents who know Bill and his reputation as a thoughtful and innovative elected official said they would be pleased and proud to have Bill represent them in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Jurupa Town Hall Meeting

On Saturday, April 26, the Hedrick for Congress campaign hosted a Town Hall meeting in the Jurupa/Glen Avon area to discuss local and national issues. Questions from residents were far reaching, from the Iraq War to immigration policy to election security. But, as with most political conversations today, the topic kept coming back to the economy. As Bill stated: ‘the economic policies of this administration have been ruinous – driving up unemployment and inflation while producing no economic growth.” However, this discussion was unique in a sense. Residents knew their Congressional Representative for the past sixteen years, Ken Calvert, has embraced and advanced these disastrous policies every step of the way. So the question at the heart of the discussion was this: what could compel a legislator to continuously vote for policies so contradictory to his constituents best interests?

In response, Bill firmly believes that Mr. Calvert is, “completely detached from the struggles of raising a family in today’s economy. He has no family and no grasp of the cost of food, gas, housing or health care.” Bill cited a classic example, when last October Mr. Calvert voted against a federal program to expand health care for needy children—“thousands of whom live in the 44th District” – and like millions of American families’ just one serious illness away from bankruptcy.

Moreover, given this administration’s lack of regulation and over-sight of mortgage lending practices, many local families face a newer economic crisis. Bill described a situation in Norco Hills where families, unable to meet their mortgage payments, “simply close the blinds and drive away.” In this neighborhood and in many similar areas though out California, “officials can’t identify the vacant homes fast enough and wait for the neighbors to notice that yards have become over-grown or filled with weeds.” In fact, Bill noted that the ranks of homeless families are growing. In Corona, “a number of children are now being bused to school from homeless shelters.” Bill recommends increased federal aid to homeless shelters and in response to the housing crisis, adjustable rates need to be frozen for struggling families. He stated, “There is absolutely no benefit for people losing their roofs over their heads.” A resident suggested that we may see encampments like the 1930’s ‘Hoovervilles,’ perhaps more aptly titled ‘Bushvilles.’ Bill said that we must keep that from happening, and we can, provided voters chose his method of responsible, attentive and engaged representation next November.

Addressing the issue of jobs and unemployment, Bill stated that recent trade policies have “stacked the deck against the American people” by forcing U.S. workers to “compete with foreign laborers who will work for forty cents an hour.” Bill added, “This is not a problem if you own the company, but if you have to earn a living it is very much a problem.” He noted that this business approach has become so acceptable that one year the Corona Chamber of Commerce sponsored a trip to China so that businesses could learn how to best facilitate a move there. According to Bill, ‘this is all about maximizing profit and it creates an ethical breach – one that is undermining our country and destroying its middle class.” Bill suggests that we first look to correct the damage done by our failed trade policies by “establishing fair markets for the exchange of goods and services and insisting on effective environmental and labor requirements for foreign manufacturers.” Locally, Bill noted the many new warehouses, “are automated and not creating the number of new jobs that was intended.” When considering development and what’s best for our region, Bill insists we must reach out to the green technology industry. He described a win-win situation; given that residents are environmentally minded and we have the perfect climate, with plenty of sun and wind, the Inland Empire is the ideal location for developing jobs in solar and wind energy technology.

Economic plans that encourage green industry to locate in the 44th District may be progressive, but they are not radical. They are ideas that come from knowing this community, its needs today and its projected needs for the future. Bill and his wife raised five children in this district and once elected he plans to return home on weekends to maintain contact with his family and his constituents through out the 44th District. This is a radical departure from the "representation" we are used to, and one of the many reasons we need and deserve Bill Hedrick.

Joan Donahue

One less primary

March 11th, 2008 · posted by Dena Bunis, Washington Bureau Chief

Our Washington intern, Morgan Cook, got word today that the House primary race expected between Democrats Bill Hedrick and Rogelio Morales in the 44th District is off.

Morales filed papers this past Friday, but officials have since determined that he did not qualify to be a candidate, said Leticia Flores, election coordinator for the Riverside County Registrar of Voters.

Hedrick is now the only Democratic candidate slated to run against Rep. That road would have run through San Onofre State Beach, home to one of California's legendary surf breaks -- Trestles. But there's more to Trestles than just waves. KPCC's Susan Valot hit the beach to find out what makes the spot so special to surfers.

Web Resources

San Onofre State Beach

California Office of Historic Preservation (OHP)

State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO)

Susan Valot: Trestles is literally off the beaten path. It's about a 10-minute walk down a trail through coastal wetlands. But long-time surfer Ed Schlegel says it's worth the extra work to get there.

Ed Schlegel: When you get into the bluffs area of the park, it's just like it was 30, 40, 50 years ago. And I don't know of too many places I know that I've been that hasn't changed in that length of time.

Valot: Cantaloupe-sized river rocks, known as "cobbles," blanket this stretch of coastline. They form a natural surf break offshore, which spawns consistently perfect waves.

Schlegel: Yes. Ooh! OK, he's up, going to the right...

Valot: Surfers have been riding these waves since the late 1920s. Even Hawaii's Duke Kahanamoku, who brought surfing to California, grabbed rides at Trestles. Wayne Donaldson is California's historic preservation officer. He grew up surfing Trestles. Donaldson says early pictures show how the famous break helped give birth to California's surf culture.

Wayne Donaldson: When we're looking at these photographs, we're seeing the surfers living out of their Model A Fords, with their surfboards on top – you know, the big planks, or the big guns, as we call them. And all their stuff is strewn out in kind of a nomadic beach life, sitting there playing ukuleles and all this really cool stuff. (laughs) I mean, big shades and crazy hats.

Valot: Eventually, a few more surfers trickled into Trestles, as jetties in Corona del Mar, Dana Point, and Oceanside blocked the waves at those popular surfing spots. Donaldson says when the Marines established Camp Pendleton in the 1940s, they actually helped preserve Trestles. But since the surf spot was on Marine Corps land, you could only catch a wave if the Marines didn't catch you first. Old-timer Ed Schlegel retraces their steps.

Schlegel: They had to be watchful for the Marines MP's because you were trespassing on the Marine base, so they would go– they would sometimes jump off into the lagoon and paddle through the lagoon and get out to the beach. The boards were so heavy back then that people would stash them in the brush, so they wouldn't have to carry them back and forth.

Valot: The beach and its famous waves attracted silver screen stars and starlets, like Lana Turner and Clark Gable. It's said that President Roosevelt even came here, to visit a friend who lived on the bluff that overlooks Trestles. That's the same bluff where President Nixon later built his Western White House. Still, surfing remained more of a novelty than a sport. Then TV rolled in, and the images of surfers conquering Hawaii's monster waves swept through homes. State preservation officer Wayne Donaldson says by the late 1950s, there were a few thousand surfers, but...

Donaldson: By the time the early '60s were – 1963, '64 – we had over two million surfers, the Beach Boys, all the movies of course, coming out of Hollywood – you know, Gidget, Beach Blanket Bingo, all these things coming out – that really took it from kind of an isolated culture to a major culture that really put California on the map.

Valot: Trestles hung ten at the heart of that culture. And Donaldson says even though the technology's changed and boards are lighter and faster, the culture's still there, even though it sometimes gets a bad rap.

Donaldson: It's really not a way of life that some people tend to identify with surfers, that are just kind of bums, that just hang out, and don't do anything. Even the earlier surfers like Greg Noll and stuff became entrepreneurs. They created their own language, in terms of describing things. But they actually lived it as families, as children, and mothers, and fathers, and not just guys that were cutting class and cutting school.

Valot: Surfer Ed Schlegel says you can still find that surf culture at Trestles.

Schlegel: It's the "aloha spirit." When we're in the water, surfing, you respect the other person's space. And if they're on a wave, they're gonna get the wave before you, you back off and let them have it. How can you be a local at San Onofre? I mean, it's open to everybody. And families come. They have barbecues. Everybody's out in the water.

Valot: And that's one reason Schlegel says Trestles needs to be protected, so that local surf culture it helped create won't be wiped out.

© 2008 SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PUBLIC RADIO
1570 E.
